Howdy, folks!
Last week, I gave you a list of 5 "don'ts" of photo editing. Well... guess what?! I have more. This post will be the rest of my "don'ts," and next time I do a list, it will be all the good stuff you can do (and, of course, the list will probably be a lot shorter).
So. To continue from last week....
6. Over-exposure. No, your photo does not look good when it's over-exposed. Sure, that over-exposure may hide your blemishes, but it also makes your nose look like Lord Voldemort's (for all you non-Harry Potter fans out there, that's not a good thing).
7. Over-saturation. Are you noticing a trend here? Over-anything is bad. Very bad. You don't want to look like a freakin' oompa loompa, people, and over-saturating your picture will do just that. You'll look like you spent too much time in a tanning booth. Plus, if you have yellow teeth... ugh. You don't want to know what that will look like.
8. Too much eyes. No, I'm not talking about you grabbing the paint tool and drawing googly eyes all over your photos. I'm talking about you trying too hard to make your eyes pop. Bright eyes are a great thing, but when you go too far... the results are terrifying.
9. Too much vignette. I personally hate large vignettes. I don't think they look professional at all. I think they just scream, "Look at me! I'm a novice at editing my photos and vignette is the only thing I know how to use!"
10. Color Filters. These are actually a love-hate thing with me. I hate it when they're used incorrectly, I love it when they're used correctly. This technique can also be used to make you look like an oompa loompa, strawberry, or alien. I'm thinkin' I did a pretty good job of making myself look like a cherry tomato here.
There you have it. Ten things NOT to do when you're editing your photos. Stay tuned for tutorials on things TO do.

hah, these are great! can't wait to see the things to do, i'll take all the help i can get! any photo editing software recommendations?
Yes, yes, yes! Personally, I don't like to use any vignette, but that's personal preference. In moderation, it's fine.
I definitely agree with you on all of these!
Hahahaha! You just listed two things I do to my pictures accidentally. LOL Yeah... I suck at pictures. ;)
I don't have Photoshop, or really any other photo editing software other than, say, Paint. So this whole time I thought I was putting pictures of nothing but my ginormous pores on my blog. I don't edit my photos, so now I am apparently a newb.
I am really loving this series :) I must say the "random cut and pastes" from part 1 is my favorite.... so incredibly terrifying.
I like making my pictures look like umpa lumpa.. hahah these are funny!!
The eyes! So Sci-fi or something. Looking super forward to the dos, this is totally making me rethink all my photo editing haha.
100% agree!!!!! When I've been editing a picture more than just correcting the exposure, I typically like to leave it on my screen and go do something else. Then I come back and glance at it. If it looks overly edited, I start over and try to do less. Leaving and coming back is the key for me. My eyes start to go all wonky on me after awhile of staring at a computer screen and editing for 20 minutes.
You make an awfully cute oompa-loompa, just sayin'....
oh alyx, your examples are uber awesome :) i especially love the terrifying eyes. i can't wait for the do's!
thanks for another good laugh, my dear!

My son really liked the picture of your creepy eyes :) He kept saying "oh no! A bad guy!" Love all the tips you are giving me :)- Christie
Such great tips. There are far too many pictures that I see that don't follow these and I just want to tell them how good the picture could have looked!

Oh my gosh... YESSSS! I don't understand why people think their pictures look good when they're over exposed. Can they not see how horribly washed out the photo is??
I don't understand the concept of somebody not being a Harry Potter fan.
Great tips! Sooo true about the over-exposure thing :)
I am excited to be your newest blog follower!
